Founded by Outdoorsmen

The beginnings of Polaris® date back to 1945, when the United States was in the throes of World War II. At the time, there were heavy restrictions on the purchase of certain materials and products outside of the military, so everyday citizens had to get creative about how they repaired and maintained their work machines. 

Hetteen Hoist & Derrick was a small company that created farm equipment, but the work was seasonal. On the off-season, they would often go hunting and through the snowy woods. They quickly realized they needed an easy and efficient way to travel long distances through the snow, and thus the first snowmobile was born. 
 

Hand on the Pulse

By 1960, the company was rebranded as Polaris® and had manufactured hundreds of incredibly popular powersports vehicles. In this time, they also shifted their focus to include buyers who wanted to use these machines recreationally, as opposed to (or in addition to) practically. The growth of the company continued to boom through the decade and well into the 1970s, expanding their operations to meet the growing demand. 
 

Innovative Growth

The 1980s saw quite the downturn, but the president of the company was undeterred. He bought out the company and, with just 100 workers, revived it. They not only paid their debt ahead of schedule, but were able to refocus back on innovation and improvement, stimulating new growth. In 1984, they entered the ATV market and in 1990, they became the first American company to produce personal watercrafts (PWCs), creating buzz around the company and reestablishing them at the top of the industry.
